Combination Skin Type
Combination skin type is exactly what the name suggests, a combination of dry skin and oily skin — often confused with oily skin since it can give a greasy appearance to certain parts of the face. The key to figuring out the difference between oily and combination skin types is to find areas of your face that get oily throughout the day. For combination skin, it is usually the T-zone (Forehead, nose and chin - that forms a T) that gets oily while the rest of the face has a normal skin type or dry skin type. Larger pores, shiny T-zone, and flaky skin on cheeks are a few symptoms of combination skin. It can get tricky to tackle both dry skin and oily skin problems in one shot.
Not sure if you have combination skin? Cleanse your face and wait for an hour before applying any products to your skin. If your T-zone starts to feel oily while the rest of your face remains dry or normal, you likely have combination skin.
What Causes Combination Skin?
The factors that cause combination skin are very similar to that of oily skin. Especially factors such as hormonal changes, climate and living environment and diet. Genetics also plays a huge role — if your family members have combination skin, you are more likely to have it too. Hormonal fluctuations or stress can lead to uneven oil production making some areas oily and leaving others dry. Due to this, hot and humid weather can make the T-zone oilier, while cold and dry weather can dry out the cheeks, creating a stark contrast between different parts of the face.
Using products that are not suited for your skin can make the imbalance worse. It gets confusing since oily and dry skin are the two opposite sides of the spectrum, so which products are you supposed to use? Exfoliating might help with the oily areas of the skin but the dry regions get stripped of the moisture. It is a delicate balance, but with the right products and some research, combination skin can be kept in check.
How to Care for Combination Skin?
Striking the balance and finding that perfect routine might look like a lot of work but we have got you covered. Keeping key steps like exfoliating, moisturising and cleansing in mind, here are a few techniques you can use to keep combination skin under control.
- Cleanser: Start with a gentle face cleanser for dry skin that hydrates your skin. The key is to find a cleanser that is gentle enough to not strip the natural oils from the dry areas while effectively removing dirt and impurities. Dry cleansing methods such as powdered cleansers or cleansing oils can be beneficial for combination skin.
- Exfoliation: Exfoliating is an essential step that prevents clogging of the pores and to remove flaky skin from the dry regions. Use a mild scrub 1-2 times a week. Focus more on the oily areas, but keep in mind not to skip the dry areas. Avoid over exfoliating since it can throw off the balance and cause extra oil production in oily areas and extreme dryness in the dry areas. Similarly, when it comes to body scrub, you can gently exfoliate dry areas such as elbows and knees while focusing more on oilier zones.
- Moisturiser: Using a moisturiser for dry skin on your cheeks while applying a light weight, non-comedogenic moisturiser on your T-zone can help maintain balance. It helps to find a lightweight non-comedogenic formula that works for the entire face. The best moisturiser for dry skin needs to deeply hydrate the skin without making it greasy.
- Toner: Opt for a toner that can balance your skin’s pH level as it will help with balancing out both the oily and dry areas.
